Find a verse
Type a reference to jump to it, or words to search for them, in one box.
One box takes both a reference and a phrase. Type John 3 16 and it goes
there; type living water and it lists every verse with those words; type
John 13 love one another and it searches only that chapter.
Open it
Press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on a Mac), or click Search above the Bible browser. Ctrl+J opens the same box, for hands that learned it as Quick Jump.
Type a reference
Type the book, the chapter and the verse separated by spaces or with a colon. The book is matched as you type, so a few letters or a common abbreviation are usually enough, and a small typo still finds it.
| You type | You get |
|---|---|
John 3 16 | John chapter 3, verse 16 |
Jn 3:16-18 | John chapter 3, verses 16 to 18 |
Genesis 1 | Genesis chapter 1, from the top |
Gen 1:31-2:3 | Genesis 1:31 through 2:3, across the chapter break |
Jude 5 | Jude verse 5: a book with one chapter takes the verse alone |
The verse’s text shows under the reference, so you can see it is the one you meant before you go. If a few letters could mean more than one book, the other books are listed underneath; pick one, or keep typing.
Search for words
Anything that is not a reference is searched across the whole translation. The verses nearest to where you are reading come first, so a phrase the preacher is circling in one epistle surfaces from that epistle rather than from Psalms. The near chip at the bottom of the box says where that is measured from; switch it off to see the closest wording first instead.
Search inside a book or chapter
Put the book, or the book and chapter, in front of the words:
John lovesearches the whole of John.John 13 love one anothersearches only John 13.
A misspelled book still works when a chapter number follows it. If the box has read a book where you meant a word, the last row searches all books for the same phrase.
Jump, or jump and show
- Enter goes to the verse in the browser. Nothing changes on the projector until you show it.
- Shift+Enter goes there and puts it on the screen.
Enter first is the safe habit: you can read the verse, check it is the one you meant, and then show it.
Recent
With nothing typed, the box lists what you looked up last, references and searches alike. Pick one to type it again.
When a book is missing
Not every translation carries every book. If the book you asked for is not in the translation you are reading, the app shows it from another installed translation and says so; you get the verse rather than an error. If no installed translation has it, it says that instead. Word searches only look in the translation you are reading.
